The Fire of Hope: Sokcho’s Ancient Full Moon Ritual Captivates Global Travelers

While the world often looks to Seoul for the "new," many are finding the "eternal" on the shores of Sokcho. On March 3, 2026, this coastal city hosted its annual Jeongwol Daeboreum (First Full Moon) Festival, transforming the serene East Sea coastline into a theater of fire, tradition, and collective wishing.

Burning the "Moon House": A Visual Masterpiece

The highlight of the festival was the Daljip Taeugi—the burning of a massive cone-shaped wooden structure known as a "Moon House." As the first full moon of the lunar year rose over the horizon, the structure was set ablaze, sending sparks into the night sky.

For the international visitors in attendance, this wasn't just a bonfire; it was a symbolic purging of the past year's misfortunes. "In a world that feels increasingly digital and disconnected, standing by a roaring fire on a beach with hundreds of people felt incredibly grounding," said Elena Rossi, a cultural photographer from Milan.

Sokcho’s Unique Intangible Heritage

Unlike other regions, Sokcho’s celebration featured the Sokcho Saja-nori (Lion Dance), a dynamic and rhythmic performance designated as an intangible cultural asset. The lion, a symbol of protection, danced through the crowds at the Yeongnangho lake area, bridging the gap between ancient folklore and modern tourism.

The 2026 festival also integrated a "Global Wishing Zone," where participants wrote their hopes for the year in various languages on traditional Hanji paper and attached them to the Daljip before it was ignited.

A New Era of "Cultural Workation"

The festival’s success highlights a shift in the region's tourism strategy. By blending traditional rituals with the city's modern infrastructure—such as the high-speed connectivity at nearby workation centers—Sokcho is attracting a "slow travel" demographic that seeks deep cultural immersion without sacrificing professional productivity.
